     INTERFACE UTI

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The UTI can operate in 16 different modes, each one dedicated to a different combination of type and number of sensors and an operational range. For a complete overview of all UTI operational modes and more information about how to use the UTI for your application, please refer to the UTI application notes and the UTI quick start guide or request the datasheets from one of our distributors.

The UTI produces its information through one digital output. The information is time multiplexed and comprises of 3 to 5 duty cycles (on / off ratios), depending on the type of measurement (mode). The diagram below shows an example of the output signal, when the UTI is in a 3-phase mode, for example when measuring one unknown capacitor value. This value corresponds with Tx. The internal (UTI) capacitance is represented by Toff and Tref corresponds to the (know) value of the reference capacitor. The value of the unknown capacitor can be easily and accurately computed from the values of Tx, Toff and Tref, together with the known value of the reference capacitor.

If you need to measure 3 different unknown capacitor values, instead of one, you need to put the UTI in 5-capacitor mode and just do a little extra computing.

The principle that was explained above holds equally well for each of the other UTI modes. The difference is in component choice, wiring and computational details.

This diagram shows an example of two complete cycles,
each consisting of three phases

For easy application development we have a UTI evaluation kit available.
